Hi! You’re receiving this email because at one point you subscribed to a newsletter I created.1 I know, it’s been a while since any of these have sent a newsletter, but I have an update:
I am starting a new newsletter right now, and if you’re getting this, you’re already subscribed. Do me a favor — read to the end before unsubscribing. If you’re not interested, no problem, thanks for reading.
Here’s my whole deal: I’m a 34-year-old white guy living in Washington, DC, with my wife Alli and our two cats. (I keep them off the internet out of respect for their privacy).2 I am a writer and a draw-er. For nearly a decade, I was mostly interested in journalistic, nonfiction comics. I created a bunch that I was proud of, for great publications, including my own self-published anthology.
I also reported on and wrote about cities and transportation, and I’m still really fascinated by things like that. Recently, I’ve been reading and writing a ton about technology, and social media specifically, for my work.
For a few reasons,3 I’m less excited about nonfiction comics than I used to be. However, for the last year or so I’ve been working on secret, fictional comics and stories for fun. I’m just trying to make things that entertain me and push me into new directions like science fiction, adventure, and experiments with form. Here’s what I propose:
Stick with me for this newsletter, and I’ll send periodic updates and missives.4 Occasionally, I’ll send out some fiction in short bursts. I’m not trying to sell you anything. It’s more that I realized that I miss writing my own newsletters and/or blogs, and I also have amassed a small pile of fiction and want a personalized, context-full venue to get it out in the world. I’m excited to start sending it to you soon. I picked out some of the more mysterious, text-less images to put throughout this email.
I’m looking forward to getting this started. If we know each other but haven’t talked recently, please consider this an invitation to reply to this email and say “Hi” and one thing you’re looking forward to this year.
Going to have a witty sign-off going forward,
Josh
The first one was called “The Josh Kramer E-mail” and stopped over a decade ago. Then I used “The Cartoon Picayune Email,” for my comics anthology. Finally, I started “The CoJo List” with Em DeMarco.
JK. They’re named Luna and Neville.
Maybe I’ll tell you about it at some point if you stick around.
I usually won’t send out more than one email a week, but I’ll give you a heads up if I’m doing something different.
Thanks for the newsletter! I plan to stick around for the explanation of how you lost interest in nonfiction comics. (So many possible reasons!)
Hell yeah! I'm excited to read. I'm actually looking forward to progress on my own fiction project this year.
